Scott Family Salsa

Hey peeps! I spoke the other day about how hard it is to get some good Mexican food in South Africa!
Finally, in the last year, El PASO brand has started becoming known here. One of our grocery stores does stock some of their items...but this is also not authentic! And honestly, it is disgustingly expensive!

Let’s face it...you can’t have Mexican night without some salsa! So I want to share with you my favorite homemade salsa recipe!

Scott Family Salsa
3 medium tomatoes diced
2 medium onions finely chopped
1 green pepper diced
1 3oz packet tomato paste
2 tbl vinegar
2 small green chilies diced
3 tbl lemon juice
1 tsp garlic salt
2 tsp cumin
¼ tsp salt
1 tsp black peper
2 tbl sugar
1 tsp dried mixed herbs

1.       In an airtight container, mix all ingredients thoroughly. Refrigerate 30 minutes.
2.       Remove from refrigerator, taste and season to taste. You can add spices to achieve desired taste or spiciness. Alternatively, return to refrigerator to chill for 2 hours or overnight. If a creamier texture is desired, place in blender until desired texture is achieved.

Do you have an authentic recipe from any country? I'd love to know about it!

  1. I ran into this problem in England too. They had "Mexican" restaurants and food, but it just wasn't the same! I'm glad you're able to introduce it to South Africa :-)

    1. I have yet to see a Mexican restaurant of any kind here. There may be one in like Jo-burg or Cape Town but I've not seen them :-( So....you make a plan! LoL

  2. Stopping by from Turn It Up Tuesday. I was going to suggest making your own, but I see you already have a delicious recipe. I'm going to bookmark it. I garden, so I can't wait to try with fresh tomatoes & chilies this summer.

  3. It's super tough for us here in SA, seeing as my hubby IS Mexican! It's hard finding jalapenos and limes sometimes. He insists that limes, not lemons, are the key to a good salsa. We cook pinto beans (aka surgar beans) and occasioannly I make tortillas. However, we can't even find the right ingreditents to make tortillas like his mother made them. We did find one good Mexican retaurant in CT, San Julian. They are from Mexico and try hard to use as many authentic ingredients as they can, even making their own corn tortillas. We really do miss that taste of home.
